From Overseas India is a Hindi program on FM COCOLO broadcasting every Sunday morning from 5 to 6 A.M. hosted by DJ Sunny Francis.

In this week's edition, Sunny picks-up Mohammed Rafi as featured artist. There are many events planned in the run up to Rafi's 100th birth anniversary on December 24 this year.

Rafi is considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential singers of the Indian subcontinent. He was notable for his versatility and range of voice; his songs varied from fast peppy numbers to patriotic songs, sad numbers to highly romantic songs, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans to classical songs.

In this week's edition, DJ Sunny Francis picks-up cabaret songs of Bollywood. The cabaret songs can be characterized as excitingly paced, youthful exuberance and upbeat rhythms. They are composed with wide range of influences from several genres. O.P. Nayyar and R.D.Burman gave most of the cabaret songs to Hindi film industry followed by Shankar-Jaikishan and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Cabaret songs tunes were often lifted, either openly or partially, from Western compositions. These songs were influenced by Western, Latin, Oriental and Arabic music.

From Overseas India is a Hindi program on FM COCOLO broadcasting every Sunday morning from 5 to 6 am.

At the end of last month(26/Feb), Legendary Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas lost his life after fighting a prolonged battle from a fatal illness in Mumbai.

When the ghazal wave stormed India in the late 1970s with singers like Jagjit and Chitra Singh, and Rajendra and Nina Mehta, it was natural for Udhas to step into the genre. His debut album Aahat was released in 1980.

Udhas’s death brings the curtain down on the troika of ghazal maestros who ruled the sound waves in the 80s and the 90s in India: Jagjit Sigh, Bhupinder Singh and Udhas.
