C: It’s only 4:00 a.m. I’m planning to wake up at daybreak. I’m very tired from our trip to Baguio yesterday.
N: During this Christmas season, we need to do a little sacrifice so that our prayers can be heard.
C: It’s easy to reach Quiapo. Let me sleep for one more hour.
N: That can’t do. Seems like we will be picking up others who will join us to attend mass.
C: Let’s go to mass on another day!
N: It is a must to complete the 9 day-novena!
C: Why don’t you go without me?
N: Well, if you really don’t like to go, we will be having breakfast of bibingka, puto bumbong, bitsu-bitsu, and pilipit and drink hot ginger tea and the Cebuano version of hot chocolate!

radio (https://radiko.jp):
radiko.jp/share/?sid=CCL&t=20231114050000

Every 2nd week of the month, our program gives a friendly and easy-to-learn Filipino
lesson. We dedicate the program to all who would like to learn the Filipino language,
particularly to those of Filipino descent.

Key Words (NOVEMBER 2023):
Tengang kawali — turning deaf ears (耳を貸さない), pretending not to hear (聞こえないふ
Tenga — ear (耳)
Kawali — skillet (スキレット), frying pan (フライパン)

Dialog in Filipino: (NOVEMBER 2023):
Parang
reunion ng mga pamilya.
C: Kaya pala may nakita akong may mga dalang mga kaldero at kawali. Mukhang
maghahanda sila para sa isang handaan.
N: May maririnig ka ring naggigitara at nagkakaraoke! Minsan masakit sa tenga. Nag-

Dialog in English (NOVEMBER 2023):
N: Cindy, this is our family’s tomb. Are you ready for the live coverage of All Soul’s Day in
the Philippines?
C: The battery is fully charged. The tombs in your province are big. They are like houses!
N: There are various types... apartment types or 2-storey buildings. Others have their own
toilets and kitchen.
C: Do the whole families stay here all day long or all-night?
N: Well, yes. Because relatives come to visit the tombs, too. It’s like a reunion of the
families.
C: That’s why I saw someone carrying pots and skillets. It looks like they will be preparing
for a feast.
N: You will also hear someone playing the guitar and singing karaoke! Sometimes, it’s ear-
piercing. A lot of people just turned a deaf ear.
C: That’s why people spend the whole day at their family tomb.
N: Well, of course! That’s our tradition, because it’s a special day for them to be with their
loved ones who have passed away.
C: That’s the reason why tourists are also coming to visit during All Souls’s Day in the
Philippines.
N: Hey, my cousin is calling us! She wants us to taste the lechon kawali!!!
